- BKS Attends Inauguration of Renewable Energy Project and Increase in Oil Production at Cepu Block
The Chairman of BKS Blok Cepu together with the Board of Directors of BKS and the leadership of ExxonMobil Cepu Limited (EMCL), attended online the inauguration of a new and renewable energy (EBT) project and the increase of oil production by 30 thousand barrels per day (bpd) in the Cepu Block. The inauguration was led directly by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, from the Blawan Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) location in Bondowoso, on Thursday, 26 June 2025.
In his report, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that the President inaugurated renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 379.7 Mega Watts (MW), spread across 15 provinces, involving an investment of IDR 25 trillion.
One of the main projects inaugurated was the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) Unit 1, built by PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal with an initial capacity of 34.5 MW. The project has been operating since February 2025 and has begun supplying electricity to the Java–Bali grid based on a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The PLTP Ijen project is supported by 83 transmission towers and a 150 kV transmission line, and is expected to supply electricity to 85,000 households. The government targets the plant’s capacity to be increased to 110 MW in the next development phase.
“There are still around 5,600 villages/hamlets that do not yet have access to electricity. Following President Prabowo’s directive, these areas will use Solar Power Plants (PLTS). We have begun this step, and it will continue for the next 5–10 years,” said the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.
In his speech, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that Indonesia has very abundant energy reserves. He expressed optimism that Indonesia will not only achieve energy self-sufficiency but also become a global food barn, with food production increases of 40–50 percent in various regions.
The President also stressed the importance of the momentum of inaugurating these renewable energy projects and the increase in Cepu Block oil production as part of a major step toward national energy independence.
“In the future, we will build 55 new energy power plants, mainly from geothermal sources. This project is an important part of the roadmap toward Net Zero Emissions—scope 1 and 2 by 2050, and scope 3 by 2060—as Indonesia’s commitment to supporting energy security and global climate goals,” President Prabowo asserted.
With this strong commitment, the government hopes that renewable energy projects will not only strengthen national energy resilience but also expand equitable access to energy even to remote villages.
